Scholarly Writing for the LIS Profession
The Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois, is pleased to offer Scholarly Writing for the LIS Profession, an online, non-credit continuing education course open to anyone, March 16 - May 4. Online synchronous sessions are Tuesdays, 2-3 p.m. (NOTE: The March 16 session will be from 2-4.) The course introduces students to the major genres of scholarly writing, primarily through writing/editing assignments and discussion of essential elements and approaches. Topics include general introduction to scholarly writing and editing; practice with writing abstracts, reviews, editorials, columns, and other opinion pieces; reporting the results of case studies, best practices, surveys, and focus group research; and writing discipline focused scholarly articles. Assignments will consist of reading and critiquing an example of the genre in question, and writing in that genre. Instructor: Robert H. Burger, Ph.D., CPA, Professor Emeritus, GSLIS. Cost: $200. Free Books, Free Magazines -- Library Closing
The Pearson Scott Foresman Library must dispose of an estimated 10,000 books. The library is offering books to libraries, Friends, and schools. Items must be picked up at the Glenview office at 1900 East Lake Avenue. Donations include trade titles in Reference, Nonfiction, and Short Stories for middle graders through adult. Textbooks are not included. For nonfiction and reference books, requests must be by Dewey range. Example: all 500’s or 910-912 or 709-812. Requests for short stories can be divided among authors or parts of the alphabet. Requests for educational journals and general interest magazines must be by year(s) only. Search by Pearson Library, Glenview (OCLC symbol QL5) in WorldCat for holdings. Library staff makes final decision regarding division and dispersal of materials. Contact judy.mcnulty@pearson.com between March 15 and March 29. Boxed items must be picked up within 48 hours of notice. Last pick up day is April 12.
