Illinois Library Day: Get OFF the Bus!

This year, you don't need to get on a bus to Springfield to take part in Illinois Library Day. The Illinois Library Association is inviting you to take part in a local Library Day this year by bringing libraries' messages to your legislators' home offices on April 16. NSLS will once again help coordinate the efforts of all our members who want to participate. Support NSLS Through T-Shirt Purchase

Lisa Dettling, school librarian at Adlai E. Stevenson High School and trustee at Lake Forest Library, is organizing a campaign to heighten public awareness about the current Illinois library systems funding crisis. Students at the high school have designed a black t-shirt with gold letters, priced at $8 each. Proceeds will go to NSLS. Purchasers are asked to wear the t-shirt on Friday, April 16 during National Library Week. This is also Illinois Library Advocacy Day. Order your t-shirt online or send your order with payment to Stevenson High School, 1 Stevenson Drive, Lincolnshire, IL 60069, Attn: Lisa Dettling, Library. Checks should be made to Stevenson High School. Orders will be available for pickup at Stevenson High School or NSLS headquarters in Wheeling. Please note on your order form the location you prefer. Stephen Abram: Prepare for the Future Library Experience

The library experience is evolving; make sure your library evolves with it! On March 16, Building the Library Experience will bring you blogger and library futurist Stephen Abram, along with Sara Tarpley, New Product Specialist at Gale, as they explore how social media, entertainment, learning, job seeking, and more can combine to provide library users with an important library experience, and what resources Gale is offering to help you build those experiences. Make sure you're providing the best and most relevant services to your patrons. In Stop What You're Doing! Another Look at Sunsetting Services on April 15, you'll learn how to make sure the services your library offers are cost effective, necessary, and meet the community's needs. Provide Better Support for Polish, Russian, and Teen Patrons

Learn how to target your library's offerings to meet the needs of specific demographics in your community. On March 18, Providing Library Services to Polish and Russian Residents will help you discover the cultural values that impact the way Polish and Russian residents view the public library, how to assess the needs of these residents, and how to design library services to meet those needs. And in the Getting Teens to Library Programming videoconference on April 7, a panel of experts will explore strategies and insights on successfully reaching out to your community's teens. 2010 Library Journal/Gale Cengage Learning Library of the Year

Library Journal invites libraries to apply for the 2010 Library Journal/Gale Cengage Learning Library of the Year award. This award celebrates the library that most profoundly demonstrates service to the community, creativity and innovation in developing specific community programs or a dramatic increase in library usage, and leadership in creating programs that can be emulated by other libraries. Along with a $10,000 cash award, the winner will be featured in the June 15, 2010 Library Journal cover story and honored with a gala reception at the American Library Association Annual Conference. Penny Severns Summer Family Literacy Grant

The Penny Severns Summer Family Literacy grant is intended to encourage and promote reading through programming, and address the reading needs of the target audience who are low literate and/or limited English speaking families. Projects also strengthen the ability of the parent to foster educational achievement and increase their ability to use the resources and services of the library. The grant provides awards from $2,000 to $4,800 for the development and implementation of family literacy activities. Application deadline is March 26.
